2022 MAZDA3 VS. 2022 HYUNDAI ELANTRA

The 2022 Mazda Mazda3 and Hyundai Elantra are both economical small sedans. Their affordability doesn’t negatively influence their pizzazz, quality and features. Gone are the days of boxy, uncomfortable, cheap-looking sedans. Manufacturers are starting to incorporate more luxury, refinement, and performance features into affordable sedans. Great examples of improvements are the 2022 Hyundai Elantra and the Mazda3. We point out the strengths of each new sedan to help you decide which one would be a good fit for you.

Models and Pricing

The Mazda3 is available in three models in 2022: the GX, GS and GT. Starting prices range from $21,400 to $31,100. You’ll be able to purchase the 2022 Elantra in three trims: the Essential, Preferred and Ultimate. Starting prices range between $20,553 and $28,253.

Performance and Engines

You’ll be able to purchase the base Mazda3 GX trim in a 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine with a maximum power of 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. If you upgrade to the GS or GT, you’ll get your trim equipped with a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine. The 2.5-litre engine is a bit more powerful and will give you 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque.

The Elantra base engine is very fuel-efficient, and you can anticipate getting 11km/L in the city, 15km/L on the highway and 12.7km/L combined. All three Elantra trims have standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines. When purchasing the GT, you have the option to upgrade the engine to the most potent 2.5-litre Turbo Dynamic Pressure engine that kicks out a massive 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

Interior and Technology

All Mazda3 trims have Mazda Connected Services, air conditioning, an eight-speaker Mazda Hamonic Acoustics sound system, heated front seats, mobile phone compatibility and a 22.35cm full-colour touchscreen. Upgrading to the GS will get you dual-zone climate control and a heated steering wheel.

The GT has a massive array of technology, comfort and interior features, including a 12-speaker Bose system, a SiriusXM radio and traffic link system, leather-trimmed upholstery, a navigation system, a 10-way power driver’s seat and much more. The Elantra comes standard with dual USB ports, mobile phone integration, a four-speaker sound system and a 20.3cm touchscreen.

Safety

By buying the 2022 Mazda3, you also get blind-spot monitoring and a system that’ll alert you of any objects in the rear when reversing. For a better and safer driving experience, you can opt to upgrade the GS to include i-Activ AWD.

The GX has all the features (and more) you would usually see only in high-end luxury vehicles. Included are rear and front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, an intelligent brake support system and more. Standard safety aids in the Elantra include a rear automatic braking system, driver attention warning, rear collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring and more.
